Description
An account of the resource
This is a collection of 48 maps and related images, the gift of Henry and Kaye Spalding, Jr., Class of 1960. The maps focus on the Chespeake Bay, the body of water that enabled the settlement and development of the state of Virginia. They depict the area between the years of 1590 and 1860, and are drawn by European mapmakers and, as evidenced in later works, those residing in the United States of America.

Covers areas from the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania to Cape Henry. The topography was shown along the shoreline from one-half mile to three miles inland. An account of the resource
Amsterdam, 1630/1636; The first derivative of Smith's map of Virginia appeared in Atlas Novus in the editions of 1636, 1638, 1641, and 1644. It is the only Smith derivative with the Indian facing the Chesapeake Bay. Powhatan's Lodge appears in the upper left of the map. The families of the Amsterdam mapmakers, many of whom spent some time in London, were closely related. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612), a Flemish engraver and instrument maker, bought plates from Mercator's family, probably in 1604. Hondius went to London about 1583, married Colette, the sister of Pieter van den Keere, in 1587, and moved to Amsterdam about 1593, establishing his publishing and bookselling firm. His daughter Elizabeth married Jan Jansson in 1612, and she helped her mother with the family firm until Colette's death in 1629. Her husband Jan later worked with her brothers, Jodocus Jr. (d.1629) and Henricus. It was from the younger Jodocus Hondius' estate that Blaeu bought 36 plates, one of which was this first derivative of Smith's map of Virginia. --From This New Founde Lande: The Henry & Kaye Spalding Map Collection at Hampden-Sydney College, 2008.

Information about rights held in and over the resource
The nature of the Hampden-Sydney College Archives and Special Collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult or even impossible to determine despite reasonable efforts.

As a result, Hampden-Sydney College claims only physical ownership of most Special Collections materials. The materials from our collections are made available for use in research, teaching, and private study, pursuant to U.S. Copyright law. The user must assume full responsibility for any use of the materials, including but not limited to, infringement of copyright and publication rights of reproduced materials. Any materials used for academic research or otherwise should be fully credited with the source.

This collection may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g. cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning and individual’s private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which the College assumes no responsibility.

London; Note: image depicts front; see "Related Item" field for verso of image. Derivative 9, State I, of Smith's map of Virginia. Oriented with north to the right, this lovely map was first published in John Speed's The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain in the addendum entitled A Prospect of the Most Parts of the World. It is based on Herrman's 1673 map of Virginia and Maryland and Smith's older map of Virginia. With other new maps of the coastal area, it was hoped the publication would encourage the possibilities of migration to the New World. --From This New Founde Lande: The Henry & Kaye Spalding Map Collection at Hampden-Sydney College, 2008.

Paris; Derived from 1754 Fry-Jefferson map of Virginia, this map appeared in Histoire Generale des Voyages by l'Abbe Provost in Paris until 1775. It shows the area from Philadelphia south to Cape Henry and west to the mountains and includes names of towns. Also noted is the great road that ran from Philadelphia, through the Valley of Virginia, and down into the Carolinas. Jacques Nicholas Bellin was "hydrographer to the king" and the first hydrographic engineer of the "Depot des cartes, et journaux du Ministere de la Marine." --From This New Founde Lande: The Henry & Kaye Spalding Map Collection at Hampden-Sydney College, 2008.

An account of the resource
Leiden, ca. 1708-1728; A prolific publisher, editor, and bookseller, Peter vander Aa included the arrival of John Smith to America in his map of Virginia. He published a similar map in his Atlas Nouveau Et Curieux (1714), but with a French title and without the decorative border. The engraved background scene hints at hostilities between the Virginia Indians and the English. --From This New Founde Lande: The Henry & Kaye Spalding Map Collection at Hampden-Sydney College, 2008.

Paris, ca. 1768; A cartouche with a more decorative top line differentiates this map from Spalding 50 [also in this collection]. Paris, ca. 1780; Showing the area from Virginia's Rappahannock River through Georgia, this map indicates larger towns by symbols colored in red.

Amsterdam; Note: see "Related Item" field for verso of map. This is the second derivative of Smith's map of Virginia. It was the only regional map in Mercator's Atlas Minor, beginning in 1628. The plate was not changed during its publication history in twelve editions, and identification of the edition depends on the letterpress on the verso of the map. In this case, the Latin language and page number indicate it was published in the 1634 edition. --From This New Founde Lande: The Henry & Kaye Spalding Map Collection at Hampden-Sydney College, 2008.
